The Castle

North of the third ring and nestled at the base of Mount Verdana is The Castle district, home to Castle Martell where King Danne II resides and the court nobles dwell. The royal artisans and court-authorized merchants are permitted to enter, but not allowed to remain except with permission from the king. The castle was built by dwarves near the beginning of the First Wave almost 400 years ago. Of an extremely shrewd design, over the ensuing centuries, the castle has grown from its strong defensive roots to become a magnificent fortress and a beautifully wrought work of architecture. Each successive ruler has added to the castle, some digging deeper underground, others expanding further into the mountain, and still others bringing in the best and brightest artisans to record the exploits of past and present kings. A summons to the castle is an extremely rare thing – for the most part those that dwell in Sanctuary only know and encounter the king’s messengers, or see the king’s guard on patrol. Some historians and sages have speculated that the castle sits atop even older ruins of other fortifications, and that it perhaps in the depths beneath lie secrets and treasures, or some hidden source of magical power that the First Wavers do not wish to make known.
